Erupting from the canvas

02/28/2012 by chicquero

There’s a tension in Ricky Allman‘s work that’s almost tangible, a tightly coiled arrangement of opposites that seems about to erupt from the canvas. Natural forms – in particular the looming moutains of his home state of Utah – vie with sharply defined shapes that replicate in a kind of sci-fi construction boom. Bursts of colour break from muted palettes; shafts of light pierce leaden skies. The visual drama is intense, the juxtapositions that fuel it brimming with uncertain interpretation. […]

Holy Potholes!

02/28/2012 by chicquero

Potholes is a series of photographs depicting the concave street cracks and holes as a collection of imaginative tableaux in the city. Captured within the backdrops of Montreal, Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York City, the sets explore the urban flaws as a playground creating a multitude of uses out of the potholes. Directly engaging the street, the city, the highly imaginative series transforms the bad into good, creating a tongue-in-cheek collection that is at once contextual and surreal. How […]

Robert Gligorov was born in 1959 in Kriva Palanca, Macedonia. He lives and works in Milan, Italy. Gligorov‘s work attempts to shock the viewer. Each piece tantalizes the imagination, awakening it from a state of lethargy. Confronting a society accustomed to sophisticated and extreme forms of visual communication, Gligorov amplifies the shock value of his work in order to compete with the deluge of images that cloud our visual field. Human beings have speculated about the relationship between inspiration and insanity for centuries. […]

Vintage Air Hostesses

02/23/2012 by chicquero

Vintage Air Hostesses The first female flight attendant was a 25-year-old registered nurse named Ellen Church, she was hired by United Airlines in 1930. In the United States, the job was one of only a few in the 1930s to permit women, which led to large numbers of applicants for the few positions available. Female flight attendants rapidly replaced male ones, and by 1936, they had all but taken over the role. They were selected not only for their knowledge but also for […]

Reality in a dream

02/22/2012 by chicquero

Ronald Kurniawan graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Inspired by ideograms, syllables, letterforms, beasts and heroic landscapes, he slowly but surely continues to create a visual language where the wilderness and civilization could merge happily together. With the belief that the sublime and nuclear age could coexist, he paints romantic environments and breaks the quiet scene with juxtaposed imagery taking the shape of icons and letterforms. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles […]

Life´s attraction

02/20/2012 by chicquero

Yorkshire born Nicola Yeoman moved to London in 2001 and worked at the Guardian as a picture editor whilst studying furniture at Guildhall University. Her combined love of photography and her practical skills as a designer led to an accidental career as a set designer. Now, at first glance at least, it is her eye for the theatrical, honed and developed in this latter role, that most informs her current artwork. Yeoman’s childhood spent growing up on a farm in […]

Miss Moss is looking fantastic in Vogue Brazil’s 36th anniversary, may 2011 issue. Feather invasion

02/18/2012 by chicquero

Kate MccGire is an extreme talented artist based in London. Her practice probes the beauty inherent in duality, exploring the play of opposites – at an aesthetic, intellectual and visceral level – that characterises the way we conceive the world. She does this by appealing to our essential duality as human beings, to our senses and our reason, and by drawing on materials capable of embodying a dichotomous way of seeing, feeling and thinking. The finished work has a consistent […]

02/16/2012 by chicquero
