Vancouver-based photographer Dina Goldstein shoots for magazines and ad agencies around the world. Her series, In the Doll House, examines the less than perfect life of Barbie and Ken. Barbie is a super doll, the most successful doll in the world. Her partner Ken is grappling with his sexuality and finds himself in a loveless marriage. He struggles with his position in the household and faces his lack of authenticity.
A little girl is visiting santas grotto and is asked what she wants for Christmas, to which she replies “I want a barbie and Action Man!”
Father Christmas, looking bemused replies “Doesn’t Barbie come with Ken”
To which the little girl says “No she comes with Action Man, she fakes it with Ken”
